Originally licensed as a tavern by John Barnes on March 19, 1776, the inn was strategically positioned at the intersection of five main roads, providing a much-needed respite for travelers. Built atop the highest ground in the area, it offers a commanding view of the surrounding wooded countryside, reminiscent of its early days when John Budd first established his log cabin in 1720.

Over the years, the inn has played a pivotal role in the community, transitioning from its original name, the Spread Eagle, through various iterations before settling on its current designation.
